Wellcome Collection
Contract Type:
Full time

Open to all, Wellcome Collection is the free destination for the incurably curious, where visitors can explore what it means to be human, in the past, present and future.

The building comprises an extraordinary mix of galleries, public event spaces, the Wellcome Library, a café, a bookshop and conference facilities. Wellcome Collection is growing. A £17.5 million development will see exciting new galleries and spaces open in November 2014.

The new Wellcome Collection programme aims to be more responsive in its approach.

We're looking for an Events Officer to support the existing programme of events for the public and in particular to lead on a new strand of more reactive, nimble, audience-driven programming that draws on the expertise within our audience as well as specialists from the local area. This new strand of activity will take place in the Reading Room.

This role will involve:

- setting up systems, in consultation with our Visitor Experience, Wellcome Library and operational teams, that allow reactive, nimble programming to take place

- identifying and securing amateur enthusiasts with a specific interest in convening an activity (examples may include drawing, 'hacking' workshops, reading groups)

- commissioning new workshop formats where expert facilitators tease ideas from the public

- arranging self-regulated groups of individuals brought together by Wellcome Collection events who might want to continue the conversation

- organising Open Space events that allow the audience to set their own agenda

- supporting the existing programme of Wellcome Collection events.

The Events Officer will also be responsible for reaching out to potential interested parties, as well as setting up systems to accommodate their needs along with those of Wellcome Collection.

To be successful, you will need to have:

- experience of delivering and developing public events in the arts, museums or galleries sector

- an interest in nurturing and training other people to develop activities

- an interest in setting up systems that allow reactive programming to take place

- a relevant degree or equivalent training

- familiarity with topics in contemporary science or medical history, medical ethics and contemporary art

- excellent communication and organisation skills, and an ability to rapidly develop good organisational awareness

- the energy and enthusiasm to assist in the creation of a range of lively and well-attended science-related events

- experience of collaborating with other specialist interest groups to create events or projects.

Due to the nature of the work, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check may be required prior to appointment.

We offer a salary of c.£28,000 per annum (depending on experience) plus excellent benefits.

To apply, submit a CV and covering letter explaining how you meet the criteria for this post.
