Director of Curatorial and Public Engagement
The Horniman Museum and Gardens, the award-winning, family-friendly museum in South London’s Forest Hill, is seeking to appoint a Director of Curatorial and Public Engagement to join the newly restructured Executive Team.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, Janet Vitmayer CBE, and responsible for the curatorial, learning and programme development staff, the new Director will join the Horniman at an exciting time in its development. The Horniman is an Arts Council England Major partner museum for 2015–2018. In this period it will be developing its international strategy, continuing to diversify and grow its audience and build on its successful cross-arts programming inspired by the collections.
The Horniman is a surprising and inspiring free attraction with visitor numbers of over 850k per annum and a growing audience online. With its collection of 350,000 objects, specimens and artefacts from around the world, its galleries include natural history, anthropology, music and an acclaimed aquarium. The Horniman uses its worldwide collections and the Gardens to encourage a wider appreciation of the World, its peoples, their cultures and its environments. This is supported by a vibrant programme of events and activities across the Museum and its 16 acres of Gardens.
In the new Director for Curatorial and Public Engagement, the Horniman seeks a strategic leader, able to apply creative vision to the development of high-quality public programming inspired by the Horniman’s internationally significant collections. To qualify for this role, you will: have a degree and post graduate qualification in science, social science, humanities, art history or museum studies; be a good team-leader able to inspire teams, and work collegiately at a strategic level; have the ability to interpret the Horniman’s work for a wider public; have excellent oral and written communication skills and will have a strong affinity to the Horniman’s mission and values, including a strong commitment to equality and diversity.
