REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President for Collections & Research

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Curator of Zoology administers the research and curatorial activities of the Department of Zoology and will oversee collections primarily in the areas of entomology, herpetology, ichthyology, malacology, mammalogy, and ornithology.
The Curator will establish an innovative, specimen-based research program, while also making use of or promoting the Department’s existing molecular genetics laboratory.
The Curator will also coordinate the collecting/research activities of the 16,000 acre Richard and Lucile Durrell Edge of Appalachia Preserve System in Adams Co, Ohio.
The Curator is responsible for fostering the research, collections, data, curation and technical services of the Department and in facilitating their use by internal and external audiences.
The Curator works closely with Museum staff to communicate and promote the research and preservation activities of the Department and to integrate them into CMC operations.
The Curator promotes departmental activities to ensure accurate and engaging public science programming, including oversight of CMC’s animal resources program.
The Curator is responsible for staffing, budget development/management and administration of the Department and interacts with external audiences as an advocate for CMC.
The Curator is expected to contribute to the overall development of CMC through participation in relevant project teams and committees.
The Curator is expected to raise research and curation funds via grant writing and donor cultivation and to be familiar with a broad range of research, museum, and collection management practices.
The anticipated time spent on various duties is generally expected to be as follows:

QUALIFICATIONS
The Curator will have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences and museum experience suitable for oversight of the Museum's collections of zoological specimens. The Curator will also have an established program of original, specimen-based research and publication and have familiarity with field collection methods. A demonstrated ability to raise research and curation funds via grant writing and/or donor cultivation is desirable, as is experience with museum collections, public education, and/or exhibits. The Curator should be a good communicator, dynamic, dedicated, and able to work with a broad range of people.
