Areas of responsibility: To support the development and delivery of exhibitions relating to the Masterplan for Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum.
Whilst the post holder will be based at Thinktank they may be required to occasionally work at other BMT sites.

Accountabilities:

1. Assist the Museum Manager with the development and delivery of the Masterplan for Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum.

2. Management and coordination of the content, interpretation and collections elements necessary to complete phase one of the Thinktank Masterplan, the development of a new Under 7s gallery.

3. To develop high quality, innovative science exhibits that deliver agreed learning outcomes and meet the needs of target audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Support the development of the Thinktank Masterplan with particular focus on Phase 1, the development of a new Under 7s gallery, and the planning of other phases

2. Manage the development of all exhibition content for the Phase 1 gallery project to agreed timescales and budgets.

3. Procure, brief and manage the work of external contractors involved in exhibition development and fit out (e.g. designers, AV software developers, interactive exhibit fabricators, fit out contractors)

4. Work closely with engagement and collections staff in developing exhibition displays and interpretation

5. Work closely with the technical team on the design and installation of the exhibition, including interactive exhibits.

6. Support the Collections Care team in the conservation, preparation and installation of collection objects.

7. Ensure that all aspects of collections care and management in respect of the Masterplan projects are carried out in accordance with BMT policies and procedures.

8. Manage and monitor specific Masterplan project budgets as agreed by the Museum Manager

9. Assist in preparing reports, funding applications and grant claims in relation to the delivery of the Thinktank Masterplan.

10. Write and contribute to project progress reports for the Senior Management Team, Stakeholders and Funders.

11. Undertake consultation and evaluation to ensure Masterplan exhibitions remain relevant to target audiences.

12. Work closely with community and educational partners and stakeholders in developing the Thinktank Masterplan and the design of its Phase 1 gallery.

13. Observe all health and safety regulations and requirements relating to the duties of the post and in accordance with health and safety legislation, observing the child protection measures applicable by law.

Person Specification

Qualification
Essential Criteria

- Degree in relevant discipline or demonstrably equivalent level of academic skills and/or work experience.

Desirable Criteria

- Science degree

- Postgraduate Qualification in museum studies or a related subject.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential Criteria

- Experience of working in a museum or science centre or heritage attraction (not likely to be less than 3 years).

- Substantial experience of managing exhibitions and gallery projects (not likely to be less than 3 years).

- Substantial experience of developing interactive museum/science centre exhibits designed for children and families audiences (not likely to be less than 3 years).

- Substantial experience of working with exhibition designers, consultants and fabricators/fit out contractors.

- Experience of working with community and educational groups in the design and development of exhibitions

- A good knowledge of budget management and monitoring.

- Substantial project management experience (not likely to be less than 3 years).

Skills

Essential Criteria

- High Levels of verbal communication.

- High Levels of numeracy.

- IT literate and familiar with the use of MS office including databases.

- Ability to write clearly and concisely using a high standard of English Language.
