Museum Educator
The Museum of Cultural and Natural History at Central Michigan University is one of America’s oldest applied laboratories for students in the interdisciplinary Museum Studies and Cultural Resource Management Programs. The fast-paced work environment also supports classes and research in Biology, Anthropology, History, and many other university disciplines. The museum is actively engaged with audiences both within and outside the university.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in museum education and associated topics as needed. Plans and executes educational programming including marketing.
Trains museum student staff for educational programs.
Develops and revises educational programs to keep them new/relevant to contemporary school curriculum/teacher needs and incorporating latest educational research.
Evaluates educational programming.
Actively seeks new markets/opportunities for educational programs.
Schedules educational programs.
Recruits and manages volunteers, including managing background checks for those that will work with children.
Develops and maintains relationships with local schools.
Works collaboratively to provide exhibits with education lessons in local schools.
Evaluates and improves procedures to manage educational programs.
Participates in an active grant writing and contracting program.
Maintains and manages School Resource Kits.
Maintains educational props.
Develops and maintains museum education webpage.
Mentors Museum Studies / Cultural Resource Management students interested in museum education.
Provides opportunities for Museum Studies / Cultural Resource Management students to participate in educational programs.
Develops and maintains interactive exhibits in the Children’s Gallery.
Helps provide a positive museum presence on campus and during campus events.
Other duties as assigned by the Museum Director.
