Although we do our best to avoid them, we should always be prepared for a disaster so that when they do happen, we have the best possible outcome. Those of us unfortunate enough to have been in these situations, for whatever reason, appreciate that it is an intense period of prioritisation and practical application. Although staged, these exercises still bring a sense of unpredictability, urgency and an appreciation for working together as a team; understanding how to apply this in the real world greatly improves the results for staff and the objects.
To facilitate the training of this NatSCA workshop we are very lucky to have enlisted the help of Jane Thompson-Webb, Head of Conservation for Birmingham Museums Trust. Jane has a wealth of experience guiding people through these scenarios, is an accredited member of Icon and chairs its Care of Collections Group.
We will be hosted in the beautiful grounds of RHS Wisley and it will be a full day with tea/coffee provided. Attendees can bring their own packed lunch or avail themselves of the numerous catering providers on site. Details of the best way to get to Wisley can be found on their website. We recommend getting the 9am shuttle bus from Woking train station unless travelling by car.
