Assistant Curator, Fluid Collections
National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe. With one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, we are responsible for the acquisition, preservation and display of a substantial part of Scotland’s cultural, historic and national heritage.
Millions of local and international visitors enjoy our four museums each year, and we also introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can physically visit our museums through, touring exhibitions, loans, community engagement, digital programmes and research.
Over the last decade, we have invested over £120 million in our sites and have more than doubled our visitor numbers, with over 3 million people now visiting our four museums. Alongside this, we have continued to transform how we communicate and engage with our audiences. 2019 has seen the completion of our Masterplan for the National Museum of Scotland with the opening of three new galleries dedicated to Ancient Egypt, East Asia and the Art of Ceramics.
At an exciting time for the organisation, National Museums Scotland offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the care and development of the fluid-preserved collections in Zoology.
You will be responsible for assisting with the curation of the fluid preserved collections (Invertebrates and Vertebrates). This is international in scope and includes ~6,000,000 specimens. It is particularly strong in Crustacea, Polychaeta and Mollusca, especially from Northern Atlantic. There is a notable collection of Antarctic octopi. It also contains a significant collection of Reptilia. Important historical collections includes extensive material from the 1902-1904 Scotia expedition led by William Speirs Bruce and the 1872-1876 Challenger expedition. The collection is housed at the National Museums Collection Centre.
We seek an exceptional candidate who can demonstrate and develop specialist knowledge, about the specified collections and enable the widest possible access to them, in line with National Museums’ objectives. The post-holder will also work with the Principal Curator of Invertebrates and the biology curatorial team.
Applicants should have a degree in Biological Sciences, in addition to proven relevant work experience in the museum environment and collection-based research. An excellent communicator with a track record of collection management/curation, understanding of taxonomic and ecological research, and successful participation in public programs. Good ICT skills are also essential. Experience in managing staff and projects, and a driving licence is desirable.
Senior Curator, Nature + Love Project
The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy. The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium. The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.
Nature + Love is a major £9m capital project aimed at widening audiences through engaging people in nature and the climate and ecological crisis. It consists of the complete renewal of the Horniman’s 60-year-old natural history displays and the creation of two new outdoor destinations: a Sustainable Gardening Zone and a Nature Explorers’ Adventure Zone. The latter develops a nature-themed children’s play area, a new family café, and opens up access to the Horniman’s half-mile Nature Trail, London’s oldest.
As Senior Curator, Nature + Love Project, you will work on the curatorial content principally around the redisplay of our Natural History Gallery, working with the Principal Curator of Natural Sciences. You will also help to develop and manage our collection, and participate in the development and delivery of digital content, public events, activities and exhibitions, working across our teams.
You will have expertise in natural sciences, experience in museum work, and have a great facility for collaboration and communication
The closing date for completed applications is 10am on 6 February. Interviews will be held on 22 February 2023.
The Horniman is an equal opportunities employer and we value and celebrate diversity. We want to better represent the communities in which we work but recognise that there is still much work to do in this area. We welcome and encourage all applicants and particularly encourage you to apply if you are from a community that is often disadvantaged by society or of ethnically diverse background.
Herbarium Collections Assistant
This is an exciting opportunity to become a member of Kew's Collections team, with responsibility for maintaining high standards in the care of Kew's internationally important preserved plant collections.
You will work as part of a small team of Collections Assistants based in the Herbarium's busy Collections Management Unit, which is responsible for freezing, recording, distributing and tracking preserved specimen consignments and shipments (approx. 50,000 specimens per year), making them available for scientific research both at Kew and institutes worldwide.
You will have previous administration experience and be educated to at least A-level or equivalent. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, a proven ability to follow precise procedures and accurately document and track specimen records through appropriate IT tools. You'll have the physical ability to lift, carry and pack heavy specimen consignments and use trolleys whilst also being able to handle individual specimens delicately and with care.
You'll be highly organised, even under time constraints and with multiple competing priorities, an excellent communicator, with accurate data entry skills, and you will be able to problem solve and prioritise your own work. You must be self-motivated and a good general knowledge of geography, plant classification, CITES or experience of previous work in a museum environment or Collections Management team would be an advantage.
Please note that this will be an office-based role only. Interviews will include an assessed tour and short test, for this reason all interviews are expected to be in-person.
Digitisation Curator - New Acquisitions
We are seeking to appoint an individual as the Digitisation Curator for New Acquisitions. Reporting to the Digital Collections New Acquisitions Manager, the postholder will use their in-depth knowledge of herbarium collections and curation procedures to help develop the new workflow for the digitisation of incoming material. This role will be essential in ensuring procedures meet the curatorial statutory obligations and can be implemented smoothly into day-to-day curatorial activities by highlighting areas where workflows could be problematic, suggesting and testing improvements.
RBG Kew are currently recruiting staff to work on an exciting and unique project to digitise Kew’s 8.5 million plant and fungal specimens and create a complete catalogue of our internationally significant collections, making specimen records and images freely available online and accessible to researchers across the globe.
The outcome of this project will provide a unique, world-leading resource making accessible data from more than 260 years of scientific exploration, placing them at the centre of efforts to combat urgent global challenges such as habitat degradation, climate change and human health.
In addition, RBG Kew are recruiting staff to support the implementation of a new collections management system to ensure efficient and effective integrated management of the Science and Living Collections and the data describing them.
The Integrated Collections Management System will allow more efficient tracking of the use of specimens to meet legislative requirements concerning access to genetic resources and benefit sharing, including the Nagoya Protocol of the Convention on Biological Diversity and plant health legislation.
Essential skills and experience required for this role include experience of curatorial activities, ideally in an herbarium setting; knowledge of taxonomic names and previous experience adjusting protocols and workflows. This post will require strong communication skills, both written and oral, as well as an understanding of data management and manipulation.
