Assistant Curator (Entomology)
Are you interested in promoting a women-in-science agenda using museum entomology collections?
Leeds Museums and Galleries seeks to appoint an enthusiastic Assistant Curator with a specialism in entomology to assist us in delivering the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund ‘Dead Inspiring’ project.
The Assistant Curator will support the care, curation and interpretation of this important part of our Designated Natural Science collection as well as facilitating access to it for a wide range of audiences. In particular to Assistant Curator will help promote the women in science agenda by engaging girls and young women with the entomology collection, including working with volunteers. We are specifically looking for someone who will be able to inspire young women to embrace science and entomology and help them take their study of this subject further post-GCSE.
The post holder will work closely with the Curators of Natural Science and with colleagues across Leeds Museums and Galleries to maximise the impact of our collections and the experience of our audiences.
This post is funded by the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years.

Assistant Keeper Grade II (Zoology)

The post-holder will act as Curator for Zoology, and have day-to-day responsibility for the zoological collections in the Museum, along with a second zoology curator already in post. This includes the identification, classification and organisation of specimens. All stages in accession are the responsibility of the Curator – from field collection, acquisition, purchase, data collection, numbering, registration, preparation of catalogues, and production of scientific and popular publications.
The applicant will also be responsible for maintenance of exhibits at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, Merrion Street, Dublin 2, development of temporary exhibitions, delivery of aspects of public programmes in relation to education and learning, and provision of a zoological enquiries service for the general public and for researchers. The Natural History Museum is scheduled to undergo major refurbishment in 2020-2024 and this project will be a significant task for all staff of the Natural History Division in coming years.
Curator (District Superintendent)
The National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin is Ireland’s leading botanical and horticultural institution, which cultivates a comprehensive collection of plants for scientific research, conservation, education and display.
The National Botanic Gardens within The Office of Public Works (OPW) manages the National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh Arboretum in Co. Wicklow and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in Co. Wexford as an integral part of the National Botanic Gardens.
Reporting to the Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management and development of the horticultural collection of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Kilmacurragh and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in New Ross as well as managing and leading the directly employed OPW workforce. S/he will also be responsible for assisting the Director with the budgeting, workforce planning, management and safety of staff and visitors at these three sites.
The successful candidate will hold a qualification at Level 7 or higher, on the National Framework of Qualifications in an appropriate subject, e.g., Horticulture, Botany or a related discipline and will have experience in the supervision or management of a plant collection, botanic gardens or arboretum as well as administrative experience in the running of a significant maintenance and works organisation.
Principal Curator, Science
At an exciting time for the organisation, National Museums Scotland offers a unique opportunity to shape a world-class science collection and lead an expert team.
You will be responsible for our rich collection of instruments relating to astronomy, geography, physics, chemistry, biomedicine, computing, and a large photography collection. Material ranges from the miniscule to the massive; from mediaeval to very modern. The collection is housed not only at the National Museum of Scotland but also at other sites, especially the National Museums Collection Centre.
We seek an outstanding candidate to develop these dynamic collections further, especially with new initiatives and contemporary collecting.
You will lead, manage and participate in the research, interpretation and STEM engagement activities of the section.
The post-holder will also work with the Keeper of Science and Technology and the section heads for Technology and Transport to lead the Department in achieving its bold ambitions.
As head of section the Principal Curator will supply a high level of expertise and experience in one or more of the collection areas covered by the section.
You should have acknowledged demonstrable research expertise in a relevant specialist area, and an established reputation in your discipline.
Applicants should have a degree and postgraduate qualification/s in a relevant subject, in addition to proven relevant work experience.
An excellent communicator with a proven track record of research and fundraising, the successful candidate will be organised, methodical, adept at problem solving, a team worker and a strategic thinker.
Experience in managing staff and projects, and good ICT skills are also essential.
A driving licence is desirable.

Assistant Curator
We are looking for a highly motivated individual for a key role in the Somerset Museums Service curatorial team, to help us deliver our ambitious programme in relation to collections, temporary exhibitions and the public programme. The role will also support our partnership with Weston Museum.
This is a diverse role, which will provide the opportunity to collaborate with staff, volunteers and partner organisations. It will suit someone with a passion for history who is flexible, highly organised and has strong written and verbal communication skills and is looking to develop their skills in a museums and heritage environment.
The Somerset Museums Service is part of the South West Heritage Trust, which delivers a broad range of heritage services across Somerset and Devon. With a turnover exceeding £3.5 million each year, we manage and run three museums (including the Museum of Somerset), 2 Archives and Local Studies services and we look after the historic environment in Somerset, including over 400 acres of reserves. We are a growing organisation, and are seeking to develop our public programme, improve visitor experiences and increase income generation.
Based at the Somerset Heritage Centre in Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton there will be the need for travel to Weston Museum and sites managed by the Trust and presence at events as required.

Collections Assistant (Life Collections)
Oxford University Museum of Natural History houses the University's extensive scientific holdings of natural history, which are used for research, teaching, and public engagement with science. The Museum's Life Collections includes five million entomological specimens, with 30,000 catalogued types, and constitutes a globally leading entomology collection. The zoology collections contain 300,000 specimens, including over 1,000 type and figured specimens.
A Collections Assistant is required to work within Life Collections for a two-year period providing secondment cover. They will work under the guidance the Life Collections team to carry out collections work including re-curation, rehousing and cataloguing specimens, dealing with loan requests, responding to enquiries, and liaising with visitors. The new team member will also plan and take part in public engagement activities.
The Museum is looking for post-holders who have experience of working with natural history collections, specifically of working with, handling and cataloguing collections to collections management standards. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to manage their own time and have excellent communication skills.

Collections Manager - Economic Botany
Kew’s Economic Botany Collection holds over 100,000 useful plant raw materials and products, ranging from ancient Egyptian wreaths to modern herbal medicines.
The Collections Manager has a crucial role in ensuring high standards of curation, and in supporting its very active research, loans and public engagement programme.

The role of Collections Manager combines hands-on curation of the Economic Botany Collection, working with volunteers and student placements to document and care for its c. 100,000 specimens, and provision of access for users in topics spanning arts, humanities and sciences, ranging from the history of science to ethnobotany.
This role will suit someone with experience in collections management in a research environment, with a meticulous approach to curation, and an enthusiasm for hosting interdisciplinary researchers, and communicating the stories of the Collection to varied audiences. It involves working closely with the Collection’s Senior Research Leader, and with a wide range of staff at Kew and at collaborating institutions.
You will be given active support in developing your curation skills, including through training and participation in museum networks and meetings. This is an exciting time for the Collection, and for this post, with plans at an early stage for a new collections database and storage facility, and the desire to develop a more diverse user community. Knowledge of collections management and an enthusiasm for user communities and public engagement are essential; we welcome applicants from a range of subject backgrounds as botanical training will be provided in post.
The salary will be £25,456 to £28,008 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

HOPE Collections Assistant
HOPE for the Future is an ambitious £1.3m project part-funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund which will safeguard the Museum’s nationally significant British insect collections, create new public spaces and create a programme of community outreach and education.
Three Collections Assistants are required to work with the Hope entomological collections currently stored in the Museum’s Westwood Room. The collection spans 150+ years of British entomology and will be rehoused and moved to safeguard it for the future by the project team.
The Assistants will work under the guidance of the project team leader to carry out the re-curation and collections move on time and to budget. The Museum is looking for postholders who have experience of working in a museum environment, specifically of working with, handling and cataloguing entomological collections or similar delicate museum objects. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to work as part of a team and have excellent communication skills.

Museum Technician
The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) is recruiting for a full-time permanent Museum Technician.
The Museum Technician will work across multiple sites to support the functions of the Museums Department. The Museum collections include historically significant ACE Designated collections and modern Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licenced material. The post holder will work closely with conservation and curatorial staff to ensure that the collections are appropriately maintained. The work will include the fabrication of bespoke acrylic containers and wooden crates for storage and transport. It will also include the construction and maintenance of plinths, mounts and fittings for exhibitions and display.
The post holder will also be responsible for the day to day maintenance of the Hunterian Museum, the Anatomy and Pathology Resource Centre, the laboratory and the workshop area ensuring that store areas are appropriately supplied and maintained. The post holder will support both the public and professional learning and engagement activities of the Museum by coordinating set-ups and moving specimens and objects when required.
