These are exciting times to join the Trust as York Castle Museum is planning a major capital project to transform its visitor experience.
We are seeking a Head of Collections and Curatorial Services to provide leadership and ensure YMT collections and buildings are cared for, developed, researched and used to maximise public benefit and long term conservation for the City of York and future generations.
The post holder will lead the project to deliver a new store for YMT collections and will hold overall responsibility for maintenance of excellent curatorial and collections management standards.
We are eager to hear from candidates with a degree and a qualification in Museum Studies, AMA, FMA or appropriate equivalent experience.
They will also have strong people management skills and experience as well as financial management skills with proven ability to manage revenue and project budgets.
A flexible approach to work is essential, including working evenings and/or weekends as required.

Head of UCL Zoology & Science Collections
UCL Culture invites applications for the post of Head of UCL Zoology and Science Collections.
This is an exciting new role that leads the curatorial team responsible for the Grant Museum's zoology collection and a range of science collections, including the Galton and Pathology collections.
The post holder ensures the value and potential of these collections is maximised by developing new and innovative uses for objects in teaching, research, exhibitions and public events.
The post holder is also responsible for developing interpretation plans for new and existing displays and spearheading collections development and documentation activities.
The post holder sits alongside the Heads of the UCL Art Collections and Petrie Egyptian Archaeology Collection and works with the Head of Collections Management to ensure the collections are properly cared for and preserved for future generations.
The post holder will also work with the Head of Public Programmes, Exhibitions Manager and Head of Public Art to ensure collections are used to the engage the public with UCL's research and to demonstrate how the past connects to the present and future.
The Museums and Cultural Programmes function within UCL Culture is responsible for delivering high quality experiences for staff, students and external audiences using UCL's rich cultural resources and assets.
The main objective of this functional area is to set the standard for using culture as means of interrogating and understanding the world around us.
The Museums and Cultural Programmes team is responsible for activities ranging from devising innovative object-based learning experiences for UCL students to producing research-driven events and exhibitions for public audiences to developing public art projects that enhance the public realm and local community.
An emphasis will be placed on developing programmes that are topical in nature and engage staff, students and external audiences in new and interesting ways.
Key requirements
The successful candidate will have experience of managing a range of collections, developing and delivering exhibitions, fundraising and evaluation and performance reporting.
They will have proven ability of leading a multi-disciplinary team, devising and implementing strategy and excellent interpersonal, advising and influencing skills.
They will have excellent team working skills, the ability to provide a high standard of customer service delivery, excellent communication skills and the ability to establish good working relationships with a wide range of disciplines.

The Wessex Museums Partnership (WMP) is a thriving consortium of the four principal museums across Dorset and Wiltshire that tell the stories of Wessex from prehistory to the present day. It is an exciting moment for the WMP as from April 2018, we are one of the Arts Council England's new National Portfolio Organisations. As such we have an ambitious programme to deliver over the next four years.
Dorset County Museum is one of the key members of the WMP and is at a pivotal moment in its 170 year history, having also secured a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). It is therefore embarking on a £15.4 million capital expansion project to construct the innovative, visitor-focused 'Tomorrow's Museum for Dorset'. This will completely reimagine the Museum - its galleries, exhibitions, storage facilities, working spaces and retail offer - to produce an organisation able to better conserve and interpret Dorset's internationally significant heritage and be ready to meet the expectations of modern visitors.
As a result of support from the WMP and HLF, Dorset County Museum is looking to recruit two new full-time Collections Assistants.
Employed in its new Collections and Public Engagement Division, this will be an exciting time for the right candidate to help shape this new department, document and secure the future for this significant collection and make it accessible to new audiences.
This fixed term appointment is until 31 March 2021.
The post holder will support all aspects of collections management, curation, research, documentation and public engagement at Dorset County Museum.
They will contribute to the delivery of our new exhibitions and galleries planned as part of the Tomorrows Museum for Dorset project through the documentation of the collections and the production and coordination of collections information, images and data for inclusion on design briefs and object lists.

Assistant Curator
The Lapworth Museum is one of the premier geological museums in the UK and contains the largest geological collection in the Midlands. The Museum has recently undergone a major Redevelopment Project which culminated in the Lapworth being an Art Fund Museum of the Year 2017 Finalist, and this is an exciting time to join the Museum team.
Summary of Role:-
Assist the Director of the Lapworth Museum of Geology to ensure appropriate curatorial practice is maintained by the Museum in line with museum sector standards.
Provide marketing, social media and public engagement support for the Lapworth and support the use of technologies used within the Lapworth including, but not exclusively, 3D scanning and printing.
Assist the Director and Museum team to ensure the effective day to day management of the Museum, its facilities and its provision for users.
The Lapworth is an integral part of the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES) and provides considerable support for teaching and research within the School.
The post holder will assist the Director to ensure that teaching and research links between the Lapworth, GEES and other academic schools, are maintained and developed.
This post is fixed term for 3 years.
Main Duties:-
Collection care
- Assist the Director to ensure appropriate museum standards in the care of geological and other collections at the Museum are in place.
- Assist the Director and other members of the Museum team to ensure the effective day to day management of the Museum.
- Working with volunteers in support of aspects of museum collection care.
- Assist the Director to develop and deliver the long-term programme of both preventative and remedial conservation within the Lapworth Museum of Geology.
- Maintain environmental monitoring systems within the Museum, in line with Museum sector standards.
- Responsibility for ensuring a programme of pest-monitoring within the Lapworth, in line with museum sector standards.
- Responsible for the issuing of loans of specimens to outside bodies and individuals (both nationally and internationally) including academics, research students, other museums, and institutions.
- Responsible for the development (with University IT services) of the Lapworth Museum's database and collection management software system.
Marketing
- Assist the LCDO to develop the Lapworth Museum's social media activity (in line with University of Birmingham approved procedures and policies) to promote the Museum and engage its diverse audiences.
- Work with the LCDO and other museum staff to develop Lapworth Museum promotional literature and associated online content.
Events
- Work with the Museum team to deliver public and campus related events and activities.
- Assist the Director with the organisation of the Museum's regular lecture series -The Lapworth Lectures
Technologies
- Work with other members of the Museum Team to enable digitisation of the Museum's collections and archive, and creation of 3D models
- Maintenance and operation of the Lapworth's equipment, such as flatbed scanners (A4 to A0), 3D scanner & printer, and large format printers, in support of teaching and research activity.
Other
- Work with the Director to support and deliver use of the collections and facilities in support of teaching and research.
Person specification:
Qualifications/Training
- A relevant qualification at degree level in a related discipline, or equivalent professional qualification, and/or equivalent experience in Geology.
- A museum studies type qualification and/or appropriate museum sector experience
Experience
- Experience of working with collection database systems.
- Knowledge and experience of Museum and Heritage standards such as Museum Accreditation, Spectrum, Benchmarks in Collection Care, PD 5454 for Archive storage.

Assistant Collections & Learning Curator (Natural Sciences)
Do you have a passion for the natural world? Are you looking for a new challenge and chance to develop your skills? Could you help us unlock the hidden stories of our museum collections?
This is an exciting time to join our Museum Service as major developments of our museums are changing the cultural landscape of Colchester and Ipswich. Supported by a grant from the John Ellerman Foundation, the service has created an opportunity for an emerging natural scientist. This funding offers a new role for those interested in developing curatorial skills, working with nationally significant natural science collections and engaging our audiences with stored specimens.
The 3-year funded Assistant role presents a unique opportunity to work with two experienced natural science curators, as part of a wider team of dynamic museum professionals across two towns. Developing skills of the modern curator, this role also involves public engagement, showcasing outcomes of the project through exhibitions, events and digital platforms.
We welcome applicants who can demonstrate a passion for natural sciences and unlocking their stories through creative communication. The role does not require previous heritage employment or museum qualification, but knowledge of, and enthusiasm for the natural world is essential.
Over the three years, the post holder will be based for five month periods, alternating between Colchester and Ipswich.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment day at a museum in Colchester or Ipswich on Thursday, 16 August.
Collections Management Project Assistant x 2
We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated people to deliver a collections management project focused on the museum collections cared for and managed by the South West Heritage Trust. The role will involve carrying out a location audit of the stored museum collections following an existing plan and methodology.
You will need a passion for material culture, an ability to work flexibly in a team to deliver a project and a careful and methodical approach.
The South West Heritage Trust is a charity which delivers a broad range of heritage services across Somerset and Devon that were previously delivered by local authorities. We manage and run three museums (including the Museum of Somerset and Somerset Rural Life Museum), two Archives and Local Studies services and look after the historic environment in Somerset.

Digital Technologies Officer
To manage a project for the digitisation of the Lapworth Museum's collections including the archive. This will involve recruiting and training volunteers to work on the project, including existing volunteers and those from target groups that the Lapworth is not currently meeting through its volunteering and engagement programmes.
Ensure the digital data developed is made widely accessible, and particularly via Higher Education (HE) research platforms. The post holder will also develop creative and innovative ways of utilising the digital data. This will involve working the Lapworth's current diverse audience, and also potential audiences through working and partnership building with community groups. The public engagement work will include close liaison with the Lapworth Museum's existing Learning & Community Development Officer, and the new Learning, Engagement & Development Officer.
The role is supported by Arts Council England (ACE), which is providing funding to the Lapworth Museum of Geology which is now one of ACE's National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs).

Learning & Engagement Officer
To develop, deliver and promote an engaging, inspiring and creative secondary school offer for the Lapworth Museum of Geology, which benefits from the outstanding collections and resources within the Museum. In addition, the post holder will work with the Museum team to further develop our existing outreach and public engagement programmes, particularly working with audiences that we are not currently reaching.
The role requires using new, creative and innovative approaches to engaging through STEAM subjects to devise a secondary school and outreach programme to inspire a larger and more diverse audience. The role will support the Lapworth Museum in its aspiration to develop as a centre of excellence for learning, and will engage our visitors and communities with collections and associated cutting edge research.
Working with the Lapworth Museum team, and target audiences, the role will include development of creative and innovative temporary exhibitions.

Digitiser
Become part of an expanding team at the cutting edge of citizen science, informatics and biodiversity research. The Natural History Museum is recruiting a Digitiser to support the digitisation of specimens as part of the Digital Collection Programme.
The post holder will be responsible for specimen digitisation in order to support the project. Digitisation responsibilities will involve the capture of digital images of specimens and associated labels. It will also include data manipulation and enhancement, such as georeferencing and providing general species information for the project.
The project may include opportunities for travel to meetings, workshops, conferences and presentations.
