The Canadian Museum of Nature is seeking a dynamic, competent biologist for the position of Assistant Collection Manager (ACM). The successful candidate will be responsible in consultation with the Curator of the Vertebrate zoology collections (VZC) for the effective management, including development and preservation, of the bird and mammal collections of the Museum, from accession through specimen preparation and curation. The Museum VZC holdings includes over 1.25 million specimens and represents the most comprehensive collection of Canadian vertebrates with emphasis on geographic and life history variation of species. The bird collection consists of about 140,000 specimens, mostly dry-preserved, with skins, skeletons, and taxidermy specimens. The mammal collection contains about 85,000 specimens, mostly dry-preserved (skins and skeletons). The VZC support various research, exhibit, and education programs, internally, nationally, and internationally. Working within the Zoology Section of the Research and Collections Division, the ACM collaborates with the researchers, other collections managers, and the Experience and Engagement staff to build, preserve, and share the collections as productively as possible. The ACM interacts with and supervises visitors, students, and volunteers working within the bird and mammal collections. The ACM sets and maintains rigorous standards of collection management, and works efficiently both independently and within teams.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work requires the ability to lift/move heavy objects up to 24 kg while following proper safety procedures. Collection specimens may represent sources of incommoding airborne particles and smell.

This is an exciting opportunity to become a member of the Digital Collections Unit of the Science Directorate. The team is responsible for the creation and curation of data and digital images representing Kew’s world class collections of plant and fungal specimens, making data widely accessible to researchers and the general public via on-line portals including Kew’s own online Herbarium and Fungarium Catalogues, JSTOR Global Plants, GBIF and Europeana.

The successful candidate will enable Kew to continue to digitise our collection of fungal specimens, starting with those fungi posing the greatest risk to the UK natural and cultivated flora.

An estimated 1.25 million specimens of dried fungi are housed in the Fungarium at Kew and is one of the oldest, largest, and most important mycological reference collections in the world. However, the wealth of information held in the Fungarium collection, including data on the distribution of the fungi and their host relationships, is still held within our collection cupboards and largely unavailable to researchers worldwide.

The successful candidate will be based in the Fungarium at Kew digitising fungi on the UK Plant Health Risk Register and on genera known to be broadly pathogenic, such as rusts and smuts. The post holder will capture images of collection labels from a minimum of 10,000 specimens and will assist with modifying and developing efficient digitisation workflows.

The Curator of the Mineralogy Collections is responsible for the effective management of five, national, earth-sciences sub collections: minerals, gems, mineral deposits / occurrences, rocks and meteorites. The Curator will work in collaboration with staff of the Mineralogy Section on the development of the collections, but is the main person responsible for the development of the display portion of the collections. The goal of all of this is to ensure maximum long-term value of the collections for Canada and to contribute to corporate objectives. As part of the responsibility for the display portion of the collections, the Curator will be expected to cultivate external working relationships with influential museum curators, dealers and potential patrons. Up to but no more than 20% of time may be spent in research activities.

The Royal Astronomical Society is looking for a documentation officer working on a temporary, short-term basis to document the collection of instruments currently located in the Royal Astronomical Society's premises in Burlington House.

They would create an accurate inventory of objects mentioned in this list of instruments belonging to the Royal Astronomical Society published in 1986 (since this list was published, several of the items in Burlington House have been loaned, and several items on loan have been returned).

The inventory would be a useable, sustainable resource which would be a foundation for future activities, such as exhibition loans.

This is a temporary post for 140 hours of work.

The post holder will report to the librarian and will be based at Burlington House.

The working pattern can be flexible but the work must be carried out between 9.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and needs to be completed by the end of September 2016.

- To create object history files for each documented object.

- To mark the objects located in the collections at Burlington House with their relevant accession number, using an appropriate method for the object and its materials.

Preston Park Museum & Grounds continues to be one of the most popular visitor attractions within the Tees Valley. The Museum reopened in 2012 following a £7 million capital redevelopment programme, funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Stockton Borough Council and it has since been recognised as a Museum of the Year finalist.

The successful candidate will join the Collections team based in the purpose built Spence Store at the Museum.

They will support the Collections Officer in caring for over 100,000 objects held within the Museum Service, covering a range of projects from conservation and display to object recording and interpretation.

The Collections team also work closely with the wider Museum team, delivering a variety of activities as part of the popular events programme.

The role requires a highly motivated, organised and flexible person who can adapt to and deliver on a wide range of requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Job purpose

To use the museum's collections and exhibitions to support the development, delivery and promotion of innovative and inspirational learning and participation opportunities for a wide range of formal and informal learners as set out in the Lapworth Museum Activity Plan.

To work with the line manager, the University Outreach teams and the other University cultural assets to develop key markets, and deliver learning both onsite and as outreach.
