Lead Developer - Digitisation
We are looking to appoint an outstanding individual as our new Lead Developer with experience in large digitisation project migrating data. Reporting to the Senior Technical Leader for Digital Revolution and a key member of the new Digitisation Project team, you will be responsible for the data quality assurance and timely migration of all digitised transcription data, working with the 3rd party supplier and the Digitisation Data Quality officers. You will focus on optimising the interactions across the team to support the effective delivery of the digitisation work, cultivating a positive, collaborative, and innovative working environment, that will develop a new and proven approach to exceed quality and quantitative outcomes.
Operations Manager
We are now looking to appoint an outstanding individual as our new Digitisation Project Operation Manager. Reporting to the Research Leader and a key member of our senior Digitisation Project team, you will be responsible for the operational and logistic leadership, management, and delivery of the digitisation of the herbarium and Fungarium specimens. You will focus on optimising the interactions across the team to support the effective delivery of the Digitisation Project, cultivating a positive, collaborative, and innovative team, that will continuously strive to reach and exceed quality and quantitative outcomes.
Integrated Collections Management System (ICMS) Training Lead
RBG Kew embarked on implementing a new integrated collections management system in 2021 and are now recruiting a Training Lead to support and train all End Users as the new system is rolled out to support the science collections. Reporting to the Data Migration Lead the Training Lead will work within the ICMS Team, delivering effective training and leading on the development of the User Manuals this postholder will play a pinnacle part in supporting the ongoing implementation and configuration of the integrated collections management system –supplied by Earthcape Oy.
Curator
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Collections Team at The Box, Plymouth. We are looking to appoint a Curator with experience in managing Natural History collections.

This is a varied and exciting role where you will be responsible for the care and display of our natural history collection, managing the relocation of stored collections into our new building, improving catalogue information and answering public enquiries. You’ll also lead on our wonderful Mammoth Gallery, helping to ensure a quality visitor experience by rotating displays and loans regularly.

You will have demonstrable experience of managing natural history collections in a museum context. Experience of working with spirit-preserved specimens is desirable You will be very organised and well able to manage projects
You will be a skilled communicator, able to advocate for your collection and get audiences excited about its many stories
You will have an entrepreneurial eye and be able to see and secure opportunities for partnership which benefit The Box and its collections
You will need a degree or equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant subject area.

Curation and Digitisation Assistant
The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking to appoint a Curation and Digitisation Assistant in the University Herbarium. The post is available full-time but we also welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time.
Role overview The main role will be to work on the auditing and digitisation (imaging and databasing) of historically and scientifically important herbarium specimens in the University Herbarium. The postholder will also assist with routine external enquiries and requests for specimens for collaborators, and supervise volunteers and students working in the collection when the Curator is unavailable.
The postholder will help create and maintain a new digital archive for the Herbarium. The successful candidate will be motivated to deliver excellent attention to detail, be a collaborative team player, as well as being comfortable working independently and efficiently. This role offers an opportunity to work in a small friendly team, with a diverse range of exciting botanical specimens.
Fossil Preparator
As Fossil Preparator, you will manage the preparation facilities within the Conservation Centre, Core Research Labs Department. You will undertake mechanical and chemical preparation of specimens from existing and newly acquired material. You will work closely with the conservation team as well as researchers and curators from the Earth Science Department. You be responsible for ensuring the preparation facilities are maintained to a high standard and that all safety protocols are recorded and kept up to date
In addition to carrying out fossil preparation, you will contribute to the general management of the conservation facility and provide occasional assistance for the Conservation Team; activities will include the installation of specimen’s for both local and touring exhibitions.
Biodiversity Co-ordinator & Principal Curator Botany
Amgueddfa Cymru is committed to safeguarding and restoring nature and our environment. We have the largest and most comprehensive collection of Welsh geology, zoology and botany specimens in the world, and this provides a unique record of the natural history of Wales, charting evolutionary and environmental change. The museum is also home to Welsh National Herbarium which contains botanical specimens from Wales and across the world, including the British Bryophyte Society Collection. This is of international importance and represents over 300 years of collecting. These collections underpin our understanding, maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity in Wales and contribute to global research in taxonomy.
All of our collections belong to the people of Wales, and we want to find new ways in which we can make them a relevant and useful resource for everyone to explore and enjoy.
Amgueddfa Cymru has 8 sites across the whole of Wales, each with its distinctive natural characteristics. This role will support the development of a better understanding of these sites and seek to engage with a range of communities in exploring bio-diversity and how we can work together to protect and restore nature.
What you’ll do…
You will:
• Play a strategic role in delivering the Museum’s goal to safeguard and increase biodiversity across the museum sites.
• Develop wider participatory approach to undertaking biodiversity surveys of the sites.
• Promote, and co-ordinate biodiversity data within the Museum and play an active role in sharing this data externally.
• Provide expertise in lower plants, to develop, promote and increase access to the collection through research and online presence
• Explore and develop new ways to digitize the collection which will make the collection accessible to a range of audiences.
• Undertake research focused on taxonomy, to support understanding and monitoring of environmental change in Wales.
• Play an active role in the Natural Sciences related events and learning programmes.
• Supervise student projects to enthuse and support young scientists in Wales.

How you’ll achieve this…
• Co-ordinate a team to deliver our programme of biodiversity audits across all museum sites to capture information on the current ecological situation.
• Promote and communicate the results of the surveys and use them to develop potential enhancements and actions plans.
• Develop a participatory element to the biodiversity surveys with partners and the public.
• Write reports to convey the survey results to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
• Represent and play a leading role on wider Museum management teams concerning biodiversity, including the Sustainability Compliance Group.
• Take part in Natural Science digitisation projects enabling an online presence of the botany collections leading to greater access, enjoyment and understanding.
• Develop the lower plant collection through curation of existing and new material.
• Develop a research profile, supported by external funding, focused on Welsh biodiversity. This should include a strong participatory element.
• Participate in outward facing events to promote work of the museum e.g. open days, behind the scenes events, also contribute to social media and blogs.
• Supervise and mentor undergraduate and PhD student projects.
• Devise and support volunteer projects.
Integrated Pest Management Manager
The British Museum is seeking an Integrated Pest Management Manager for our complex estate. The post-holder will play a key role in development of Policy and implementation and delivery of the Museum’s estate-wide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, to protect both the Museum’s collections and reputation by minimising pest problems.
In this role, you will work directly with stakeholders to ensure that the Museum meets its requirements in relation to policies and procedures, including anticipating the future needs of the Museum. You will need to deliver an appropriate training programme to maintain the profile of IPM within the Museum.
Key areas of responsibility:
Implementing, reviewing and delivering the IPM strategy and programme and working with other stakeholders to develop supporting policies and procedures as required
Facilitating and ensuring consistent delivery of IPM roles and responsibilities from all Museum departments including inspection of spaces and activities
Ensuring that an appropriate training programme is delivered to maintain the profile of IPM within the Museum, including delivery of staff and contractor general IPM induction
Ensuring delivery of recommended actions by Hard and Soft services teams to prevent pest problems, through close liaison with Facilities and Building Services departments
Advising Capital Planning and Programme Management, Exhibitions and other designers on IPM issues
Liaising with external pest consultant and pest control contractors
Liaison with other on-site contract providers, particularly catering service provider to ensure compliance with IPM procedures
Maintaining Estate risk zone maps; compiling, mapping and reporting all trap and other relevant data; and updating or revalidating of policy and strategy documents and implementation plan as required
Site inspections and audit to ensure cleaning and maintenance regimes are adequate
Management of the Museum’s Pest Treatment Facility ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice.
Where necessary manage response to pest outbreaks
Person specification:
The successful candidate will be educated to A-level standard, or will have equivalent experience, including a professional IPM qualification and/or demonstrable experience of IPM. You will have excellent computer skills and able to understand plans and design drawings.
We are looking for an experienced manager who can influence and work with others to ensure that objectives are met. You will need to have the ability to prioritise your workload, work unsupervised under pressure and take ownership of any problems. The post-holder will be confident in communicating technical matters effectively to a variety of audiences.
Documentation Assistant
The Museum is looking for a Documentation Assistant to support the collections team in the delivery of the Collections Documentation Plan and the on-boarding of a new collections management system from 2024. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who would like to experience working with a broad range of collections. It is an entry level position which will be supported by the wider team.
The Documentation Assistant will undertake an inventory of collections making sure that the documentation meets SPECTRUM standards and allows us to meet our Museum Accreditation requirements. They will work with the Head of Collections and the Curator of Natural History to improve the existing catalogue records to expand the quality and type of data held.
We are looking for a person who has a basic understanding of, or interest in, documenting museum collections and the challenges of documentation work. You will have great organisational skills including the ability to work independently to drive forward your own work programme. Excellent computer-based skills with an ability to input data with a high level of accuracy are essential. Undertaking manual handling, sometimes working in dusty, cramped spaces or at height is required.
Training: A Professional Development Plan will be agreed with the Head of Collections. This will include training, mentoring and new professional opportunities.

Curatorial Assistant

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery Trust is a major independent regional museum welcoming over 200,000 visitors every year. We are the lead organisation of the Cumbria Museum Consortium, an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. As part of our Manifesto we strive to engage our local community at every level: we aim to provide a third space that anchors the community, using our stunning collections, which include our recently Designated Natural Science collection, to inspire our diverse audiences.
The Museum's Natural Science collection is Designated for a reason - it is a comprehensive, scientifically important and nationally significant collection of 300,000+ specimens that represent the flora and fauna of Cumbria, the most biodiverse county in the UK. This exciting new post, funded via The Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund - delivered by the Museums Association, represents an extraordinary opportunity to work within one of the most important natural science collections in the UK and on an incredibly exciting new project.
This role will support Tullie House's Biodiversity Curator to deliver the 'Once Upon A Planet' project. 'Once Upon a Planet' is an ambitious collections engagement project that will showcase our designated natural science collections, representative of the most biodiverse county in England, and use them to inspire innovative, people-centred engagement with a purpose. It will deliver a step-change in in how we understand, use, display and develop our natural science collections in collaboration with our communities as we reimagine Tullie House as a museum for the future.
The Curatorial Assistant role will support the Once Upon A Planet team to deliver project outputs, including a major exhibition in Summer 2022. The role will also support the Biodiversity Curator to care for, document and digitise the natural science collections, and deliver public and community engagement activity.
This is an entry level role, and so previous experience of working in a museum is not a requirement - we are looking for a candidate with an interest in natural science and/or in gaining experience within a dynamic curatorial team.
Purpose of the Role
- Under the direction of the Biodiversity Curator, to care for, document and digitise the Natural Science collection to recognised professional standards, and support the delivery of public and community engagement.
- To work with the Once Upon a Planet project team to support the development and delivery of the Once Upon a Planet project outputs, in particular an exhibition in summer 2022.
