The Florida Museum of Natural History is a unit of the University of Florida. Its Vertebrate Paleontology division currently consists of two curators, four full-time staff, and10 graduate students. It has an extensive collection (~750,000 specimens) of primarily Cenozoic fossils that form the basis for a wide variety of paleontological research. The Division of Vertebrate Paleontology of the Florida Museum of Natural History seeks a full-time (40 hr/wk) collection assistant. The position is funded by a NSF grant and has a duration of one to two years, with a starting date as soon as possible. Responsibilities include identification and cataloging of Neogene and Pleistocene microvertebrate fossils from Panama. This position will require regular travel to Panama and other locations.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications include knowledge of microfaunal vertebrates, a bachelor’s degree at the time of hire, and one year of experience working in a paleontology collection at a museum. Preference will be for candidates who can demonstrate experience with curation of Neogene and/or Pleistocene North American fossils from a broad range of vertebrate classes.

Extensive knowledge of microfaunal vertebrates, either through college coursework or work experience. Physically able to safely move and handle vertebrate fossils.

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization such as geology or biology.

Experience with identification of Neogene and/or Pleistocene North American fossils from a broad range of vertebrate classes.

Experience using a computer database.

Experience working with or supervising volunteers in a museum and field setting.

Derbyshire County Council is pleased that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has agreed its support for 'Collections in the Landscape', a programme to improve the visitor experience at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. 'Collections in the Landscape' will develop a range of digital applications to interpret the collections at the Museum. These will inform a new gallery, The Wonders of the Peak, enabling visitor access to the collections using modern media. The collections are principally geology and archaeology from the Peak District, and include fine art landscapes of Derbyshire. You will be needed to co-ordinate the safe delivery of 'Collections in the Landscape' as detailed in the application to the HLF.

You will have experience working as a team member in a significant museum development.

You will be skilled in working with volunteers and visitors, and negotiating with several partners.

You will have experience of developing digital media and have good social media and evaluation skills.

You will be able to manage your own and others' workloads and have the skills to ensure that the programme is delivered on time and meeting expectations.

You will be expected to work alternate Saturdays.

A car user allowance is attached to this post but it is possible for the allowance to be converted to other forms of transport where there is a requirement to undertake travel as part of this post.

This post will provide support for the management, conservation and development of the NHM Botanical Collections primarily, but not exclusively, by preparing, mounting and/or repairing seed plants, ferns and algae specimens according to standards and protocols approved and agreed by the Head of Collections and Collections Managers in discussion with initiative leaders and departmental researchers. Mounting is the process of fixing plants and labels containing associated data to archival quality paper sheets to minimize the risk of damage through handling and transportation.

The role will enhance Kew’s reputation as a scientific institution through facilitating the delivery of expert training. It will be essential in ensuring the quality of seed collections by Millennium Seed Bank (MSB) partners is maintained at the highest levels, as we work towards the target of storing seed of 25% of the world’s plants by 2020. In addition, the post holder will assist with the implementation of a series of internal and external symposia on key science topics and contribute to science outreach. This role reports to the Crop Wild Relatives Project Coordinator at the Millennium Seed Bank. The post holder will cooperate closely with the Senior Science Officer – Education and Communications and with the core Science Administrator - Education. This post is based at Kew's science facilities at Wakehurst Place, West Sussex.

The post holder will be required to independently and effectively deliver small well defined projects. Support will be provided primarily to the Crop Wild Relatives and MSB Sfumato projects. This task will include the co-ordination of training courses, other short courses and educational visits to the Millennium Seed Bank. The post holder will provide administrative support to training groups, including the compilation of technical and financial training course reports.

The successful candidate will have a proven solid experience in an administrative capacity and will be educated to degree level (or equivalent). A high standard of communication will be maintained. Experience in a scientific environment and in delivering small sized projects or work packages is essential. Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience in monitoring and reporting on financial data. Specific experience of training course administration and of working in a higher education institution is highly desirable.

Role description: The Curatorial Assistant (Human Remains and Repatriation) will be responsible for undertaking archival research on parts of the NHM human remains collection and writing this up as project reports. Oxford University Museum of Natural History houses the University’s internationally important geological and zoological collections, which are used for research, teaching, and public engagement in science. It is seeking to appoint a new Collections Manager for the Life Collections. The Life Collections comprise six million specimens, of which around 30,000 are zoological type specimens, and there are currently 10 staff with collection management responsibilities in this area. The collections have particular strengths in insects, crustaceans and vertebrates. The Collections Manager will work across all areas of Life Collections, but the role will have particular emphasis on the vertebrate and/or malacology collections. The successful applicant will be responsible for documentation, imaging, databases and conservation, and will facilitate research visits and loans. They will also be part of the teams developing new exhibitions and displays, and will participate fully in the museum’s outreach and public engagement programme. It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in field collecting and some collections-based research.

For this post, you should have a degree with a substantial biological sciences component together with a postgraduate degree in museum studies or a biological discipline. You will have an excellent understanding of whole-organism zoology and a track record of collections-focused museum work. You must show evidence of working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and will need to have experience of working with relational databases and collections management systems.

Whilst the role is a grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 6 (£27,057- £32,227 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly.
