Role description:
This role will contribute to the Natural History Museum's BP NW Europe PalaeoGIS Project. The project is designed to undertake a thorough taxonomic, stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental reappraisal of the former British Petroleum Micropalaeontology Collection, with specific focus on the material associated with northwest Europe. The Post-doctoral Research Assistant will contribute to the successful completion of the project by undertaking analysis and research into multiple northwest European Mesozoic/Cenozoic well run and outcrop sequences, housed at the Natural History Museum, London. The role holder will be responsible for leading research into the analysis of foraminifera assemblages (both benthic and planktonic), which in turn will be used to update the existing interpretations of the well and outcrop material. Such information will then be used in order to provide palaeoenvironmental interpretations for the northwest European region in-line with the project scope.
Salary: £28,188 - £30,332 per annum plus benefits

Role description:
This is a new role to join a growing Touring Exhibitions section of the Museum’s International Engagement Department. The Touring Exhibitions Collections Coordinator will oversee the planning and installation of the Natural History Museum’s collections at venues worldwide, as well as assisting with the formulation and execution of related touring exhibition procedures. This role will include extensive global travel to hosting venues. Reporting into the Touring Exhibitions Operations Manager, the role holder will manage object loans to hosting venues by liaising with external stakeholders and service providers, as well as other sections of the Museum, such as Central Registry, Conservation, Content Production, Heads of Collections, Curatorial, and Security.
The successful candidate must be experienced in object handling and have excellent interpersonal skills. Strong organisational, forward planning and problem-solving skills are essential, as is a keen attention to detail. Candidates must additionally have sound knowledge of international standards for museum collections, be proficient with computer software (such as Excel and File Maker Pro, with experience of KeEMu also desirable), and ideally have extensive experience working with collections on tour, including experience of packing, transportation and exhibition installation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Curator of Zoology administers the research and curatorial activities of the Department of Zoology and will oversee collections primarily in the areas of entomology, herpetology, ichthyology, malacology, mammalogy, and ornithology.
The Curator will establish an innovative, specimen-based research program, while also making use of or promoting the Department’s existing molecular genetics laboratory.
The Curator will also coordinate the collecting/research activities of the 16,000 acre Richard and Lucile Durrell Edge of Appalachia Preserve System in Adams Co, Ohio.
The Curator is responsible for fostering the research, collections, data, curation and technical services of the Department and in facilitating their use by internal and external audiences.
The Curator works closely with Museum staff to communicate and promote the research and preservation activities of the Department and to integrate them into CMC operations.
The Curator promotes departmental activities to ensure accurate and engaging public science programming, including oversight of CMC’s animal resources program.
The Curator is responsible for staffing, budget development/management and administration of the Department and interacts with external audiences as an advocate for CMC.

Operates the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology preparation laboratory within the MCZ Paleontology Preparation Facility, providing preparation for the faculty curator. Supervises the training of graduate students in the techniques of fossil vertebrate preparation. Assumes a major role in planning field expeditions, including bibliographic searches, preparation of materials/data for grant proposals, map and aerial photo surveys, and testing and purchase of field equipment. ◦Specialized technical skills required in preparation of fossil vertebrates, including microscopic dissection; sound knowledge of vertebrate skeletal anatomy, as well as fundamental concepts of stratigraphy, sedimentology and vertebrate evolution.
◦Experience conducting field work, including excavating, consolidating, collecting and documenting fossil discoveries.
◦Experience using manual and mechanical fossil preparation techniques, including use of air scribes, air abrasives, rock saws, etc.

MSc in a related discipline preferred. 5+ years of experience is preferred in vertebrate paleontology preparation. Hands-on experience using acid preparation methods. Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - (Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation)
Preparation: Under direction of the Curator, the Preparator will assist the Collections Manager in all activities of the Vertebrate Paleontology Lab, and coordinates activities with other labs as required. Prepares fossils pertinent to the department's research. Also called on to prepare fossils for other reasons (exhibits, education, etc.). Will oversee and instruct other staff and volunteers in fossil identification, preparation, reassembly, cataloguing and curation. Will actively recruit new volunteer preparators. Ensures that the vertebrate lab is clean and orderly. Orders supplies required for the lab. Maintains lab equipment.
Fossil Collection: Under direction of the Curator, the Preparator will assist the Collections Manager in the preparation of, and participates in, local and remote site work. This will include: assisting with all logistics for field camp set up, the acquisition and transport to the site of all required equipment; fossil and data (maps, taphonomic data, photographs, videos, etc.) collection; and transportation of fossil vertebrates. Will include supervision of the field camp and related fossil localities in the absence of the Curator or the Collections Manager, including the supervision of staff, student and volunteers. Will assist the Curator and Collections Manager in the preparing reports relating to fossil collection and preparation.
Curation and Cataloging: Under direction of the Curator, the Preparator will assist the Collections Manager in the curation and cataloging of vertebrate paleontology fossils. Maintains computer and hard copy files pertinent to vertebrate preparation, lab equipment, volunteers, etc. Provides Curator with information for the monthly report.
Education and/or Experience

Museum Collections Manager Paleontology
Position starting in Fall 2015
Summary
The Collection Manager is charged with overseeing use and care of the fossil collection at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. This involves working with museum faculty and staff to ensure the organization, conservation, and accessibility of a collection totaling over 150,000 individual specimens.
Relationships
The Collection Manager reports to the Director of the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, is supervised by the curator, and must work closely with Alf Museum/Webb staff and faculty.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
◦Conservation and curation of fossil specimens and associated documentation
◦Organization and housing of fossil specimens and associated documentation
◦Maintain computer database and digitization of fossil specimens and associated documentation
◦Development and implementation of collections management policies that are aligned with best practices in the discipline

Supervisory Responsibility
The collection manager is responsible for supervising collection assistants and collection volunteers.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related academic discipline; master’s degree or higher in paleontology, geology, natural history museum studies, or a related discipline is preferred. Experience with computer database systems (e.g., Specify or Access) and management, paleontological lab techniques (e.g., basic fossil preparation and repair), museum methods (basic curation and proper handling of fossil specimens), basic ertebrate osteology and identification, paleontological fieldwork, and management of fossils from public lands also preferred.
